Laamu Atoll

Laamu is one of the larger Maldivian atolls by land area, and shares Thaa's reputation as swell-season surf territory (see our surfing guide and Thaa Atoll guide) — the two are often covered together on the same boat-based surf itineraries.

Beyond surf

Laamu is also home to some of the oldest archaeological remains in the Maldives, including ancient mounds linked to the country's pre-Islamic Buddhist period (see our history timeline) — a detail most visiting surfers never actually encounter, but worth knowing if history is part of the draw.

What to expect

A handful of resorts operate here, but Laamu is more defined by its size, its local-island communities, and its surf than by a dense resort cluster — a genuinely different rhythm to the central atolls.
