Kaafu Atoll is the administrative atoll containing Malé, the tiny, densely built capital island, and Hulhulé, home to Velana International Airport — which makes it the first (and for many day-trippers, only) atoll most visitors ever see.
North and South Malé Atoll
Tourism geography splits Kaafu into North and South Malé Atoll, both ringed with resorts that trade on exactly this proximity — many are a 15 to 45 minute speedboat ride from the airport, with no seaplane required.
What it's known for
- The shortest, most predictable transfers of any resort atoll — useful for short breaks or stopovers.
- A genuine mix of high-end private-island resorts and, on inhabited islands like Guraidhoo, a local-island guesthouse scene.
- Good beginner and intermediate dive sites, plus surf breaks around islands like Thulusdhoo (see our surfing guide).
Malé itself
The capital is worth distinguishing from the resort atoll around it: a compact, crowded city island with almost none of the postcard scenery tourists expect — most visitors pass through it only in transit, though a short walk around the old town, fish market and Hukuru Miskiy (the Old Friday Mosque) makes for an easy stopover if you have a few hours between flights.
