Most resort islands are small enough to walk comfortably, but a handful of larger islands — bigger resorts, and reclaimed land like Hulhumalé (see our Hulhumalé guide) — are genuinely more practical to get around on two wheels.
Why some resorts lean into this
Larger-footprint resorts (see our boutique vs. large resorts guide) sometimes cover enough ground that walking between your villa, the main restaurant and the spa adds up over a week — many provide bicycles as a standard or on-request amenity specifically to solve this, rather than relying purely on buggies.
Flat terrain everywhere
Because the entire country sits barely above sea level, there's no meaningful elevation change anywhere — cycling in the Maldives is about as flat and low-effort as it gets, suitable for casual riders of any fitness level.
Hulhumalé specifically
As a purpose-planned, wider-laid-out island (rather than Malé's dense original street grid), Hulhumalé is a genuinely practical place to explore by bike if you have time around a flight — see our Malé layover guide for how the two areas compare.
