The awkward Maldives baggage surprise happens when a perfectly legal long-haul suitcase meets a much smaller seaplane allowance. If your resort transfer is operated by Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA), the current standard allowance is 25 kg per person in total: 20 kg checked baggage plus 5 kg hand baggage. That is the number I would plan around — not the allowance printed on the international ticket.
The current TMA allowance
TMA’s current FAQ lists:
- 20 kg checked baggage per passenger;
- 5 kg hand baggage per passenger;
- 25 kg total standard allowance;
- no additional baggage allowance for infants;
- 32 kg maximum for any single bag.
TMA currently lists excess baggage at US$5 per kg plus applicable taxes. Fees and policies can change, so I would still check the operator page close to departure rather than screenshot this guide and treat it as a contract.
Your resort books the transfer
A scheduled TMA resort transfer is normally arranged through the resort, tour operator or travel agent rather than as a random walk-up flight. After international arrival and immigration, the resort or tour-operator representative directs you to TMA check-in. Your hold bags then travel separately to the Noovilu Seaplane Terminal while passengers are transferred to the terminal by vehicle.
That makes one email worth sending before you fly: “Please confirm my transfer operator, baggage allowance and what happens if my international flight is delayed.” It removes a remarkable amount of arrival-day guesswork.
Do not bury your essentials in the checked bag
TMA says that on rare occasions checked luggage may travel after the passenger because of operational weight constraints. The airline says delayed luggage is delivered to the destination the same day and passengers are allowed to remove necessary items before departure.
I would still build a sensible hand-baggage buffer:
- essential medication;
- phone, documents and valuables;
- one change of light clothing;
- swimwear;
- anything you would genuinely need for the first few resort hours.
Oversized sporting equipment is a different problem
This is where ordinary “pay excess baggage” logic can break. TMA says oversized equipment such as surfboards cannot be accommodated on a scheduled seaplane flight because of cabin/luggage-compartment limits and advises a charter for that type of load.
If you are travelling with surf, dive, photography or other bulky specialist gear, ask the resort/operator specifically about dimensions as well as kilograms. A bag can be light enough and still be physically wrong for a Twin Otter compartment.
Smart luggage and lithium batteries
TMA’s current baggage restrictions do not accept smart baggage with a built-in lithium battery that is non-removable or inaccessible. A smart bag is permitted only when the battery can be completely removed before travel. Keep spare batteries and power banks in the correct baggage type under the operator’s current dangerous-goods rules.
Why weighing at home matters
The easiest place to solve a baggage problem is your bedroom floor, not Velana airport. I would weigh the checked bag and hand baggage separately, then leave margin for anything added during the trip. If your international airline gives you 30–35 kg, that does not mean the seaplane silently inherits it.
For couples or families, do not assume allowances can be pooled exactly the way your long-haul airline allows. Get the resort to confirm how the specific transfer booking will be handled.
Multi-resort trips need another check
A multi-resort itinerary can involve different transfer operators on different legs — seaplane, domestic flight and speedboat. Recheck baggage rules for every air segment instead of treating the first transfer’s rules as a country-wide standard.
My packing rule
If a seaplane is part of the holiday, I would pack to the seaplane allowance first and treat any extra long-haul allowance as irrelevant unless the resort has confirmed a storage or forwarding solution. It is a lot easier to enjoy the view from the Twin Otter when you are not mentally pricing every kilogram in the hold.
