Almost every international arrival lands at Velana International Airport (MLE), built on its own small island — Hulhulé — just across the water from the capital, Malé. A smaller number of southern-focused itineraries use Gan International Airport (GAN) in Addu Atoll, which mainly handles regional connections.
MLE is well connected from the Middle East, South and East Asia, and has a growing number of direct long-haul routes from Europe, particularly in peak season. Most travellers from further afield connect through hubs like Dubai, Doha, Colombo, Singapore or Istanbul.
The airport is not the destination
This is the detail that catches first-time visitors out: landing at MLE is only step one. Because the Maldives is spread across 26 atolls, your resort or guesthouse could be anywhere from a 10-minute speedboat ride to a 45-minute seaplane flight from the airport. Onward transport is arranged separately — sometimes bundled into your resort package, sometimes booked independently — and it's worth confirming which before you fly. - Look for your resort or transfer company's welcome desk immediately after immigration and baggage claim; most greet guests by name inside the terminal.
- If your onward transfer is a seaplane, flights only operate in daylight — a late-night arrival usually means an overnight in Malé/Hulhulé before you continue.
