Travelling to the Maldives solo

The Maldives' marketing leans so heavily on couples and honeymoons that it's easy to assume it's a poor fit for solo travel — in practice, it depends heavily on which route you take, and one of the two main styles suits solo travellers very well.

The resort route, solo

Some resorts price rooms per villa regardless of occupancy, which works fine solo; others apply a single-supplement that makes solo resort travel noticeably more expensive per person than travelling as a couple. It's worth asking directly rather than assuming either way, and worth weighing against the alternative below.

The local-island route, solo

Guesthouses on islands like Maafushi and Ukulhas (see our local island guesthouses guide) are, in practice, a genuinely solo-friendly way to experience the Maldives — lower cost per night than a resort, a more social guesthouse-common-area culture, and excursions bought individually rather than bundled into a couples-oriented package.

Meeting people

Group dive trips, liveaboards (see our liveaboards guide) and guesthouse-organised excursions are all natural, low-effort ways to end up around other travellers, even if you've booked everything independently.

Safety

The Maldives is generally considered a safe destination for solo travellers, including solo women, with standard travel precautions applying — the same common-sense approach you'd bring to any destination, rather than anything specific to the Maldives.
