Liveaboard dive safaris

A liveaboard flips the usual Maldives logic: instead of choosing one island and staying put, you sleep on a boat that moves between dive sites and atolls through the week — reaching remote reefs and channels that would otherwise mean multiple separate resort stays.

Who it suits

Liveaboards are built around diving, not lounging on a beach — most itineraries schedule three to four dives a day. They suit travellers who've already done a resort trip and want to go deeper (literally) into dive sites, rather than first-timers wanting a classic overwater-villa holiday.

What a week typically looks like

  • Multiple guided dives a day, often at sites too remote for day-boats from resorts.
  • Itineraries built around the monsoon — northern atolls in one season, central or southern atolls in the other — to follow the best conditions and currents.
  • Shared cabins and communal meals, closer in spirit to an expedition than a resort stay.
  • Alcohol is often available on board, since liveaboards operate under different licensing to inhabited local islands.
Certification matters: serious liveaboard itineraries — strong currents, channel dives, deeper sites — generally expect an Advanced Open Water certification or equivalent logged experience, not a first-timer course. Check the specific boat's requirements before booking.
