Jet lag & adjusting to the time zone

The Maldives sits at a fixed UTC+5 year-round — no daylight saving adjustment (see our remote work guide for how this affects calls home) — which makes the time difference predictable, even if adjusting to it still takes a day or two depending on where you're travelling from.

Depending on where you're coming from

Travellers from Europe typically face a moderate few-hour shift; those from East Asia or Australia often have a smaller adjustment given the closer time alignment; and travellers from the Americas face the largest shift, given how far UTC+5 sits from those time zones. None of these are extreme by international travel standards, but they're still worth planning the first day or two around.

Making the first day easier

  • If your flight arrives in the afternoon or evening, resist the urge to nap through to the next morning — a short rest followed by staying up to a normal local bedtime adjusts faster than a long sleep at the wrong time.
  • Get outside and into natural light where possible on arrival day — daylight exposure is one of the more effective tools for resetting your body clock.
  • Keep the first full day light on activities — see our common mistakes guide for other first-day pacing pitfalls.

Worth remembering for the trip home

The adjustment works in both directions — budget a day or two to readjust after you're home too, particularly if you're heading straight back into work.
