A resort stay and a liveaboard trip (see our liveaboards guide) aren't really variations on the same holiday — they're built around different priorities entirely, and picking between them is more about what you want from the days themselves than about price or luxury level.
Choose a resort if...
- This is a first Maldives trip — see our first-timers guide.
- You want a flexible daily pace: lounging, a few activities, meals whenever you like.
- You're travelling as a couple or family and want a wide range of non-diving activities too.
- You'd rather stay in one place than move each day.
Choose a liveaboard if...
- Diving is the primary reason for the trip, not a nice-to-have.
- You want access to remote sites — like Vaavu's Fotteyo Kandu or far-flung reefs — that day-boats from a single resort can't reach.
- You're already an experienced, certified diver (see our learning to dive guide) rather than a first-timer.
- A shared-cabin, expedition-style trip appeals more than a private villa.
A middle path
Nothing stops you doing both across separate trips, or even in one longer multi-stop itinerary — a resort stay for relaxation and a liveaboard leg for serious diving, though that adds real logistical complexity worth weighing against a simpler single-format trip.
